What to Expect

  • Teacher

Tom teaches the Yat Malmgren approach to character transformation, and how it has evolved and expanded since he studied intensively with Yat during the 70’s. During the first week he will  concentrate on introducing new students to the principles of the work through exercises, improvisation, and personal investigations. During the three weeks he will lead all the participants into a deep experiential dive, exposing them to the fullest internal ranges of themselves. Through physical embodiments, including swinging, scenario creations, and character/scene work he will guide the actors to the energies less familiar in their artistic processes, and how to incorporate that into new areas of their creative life. All the while, he will be celebrating the wonderful qualities the actor already has. (Learn More)

  • Translator

  • Teacher

Pamela will offer embodiment sessions to start each day. Connecting the artists to their breath, their open voice, their bodily freedom, their energy in motion. Pamela offers techniques pioneered by Cicely Berry, Kristin Linklater, Marya Lowry, Rudolf Laban, Tadashi Suzuki, Jerzy Grotowski, Konstantin Stanislavski, Carl Jung and more, combined with her intuitive sense of the group and individual needs. Participants will feel more open, more peaceful, more powerful, more truly themselves. (Learn More)

  • Teacher

Miranda’s work prepares the actor to receive and awaken the Yat work within themselves. Through deepening access to the experiential language of the actor — sensation, feeling, movement — we learn to attune to the subtle energies and inner vibrations that give rise to authentic behavior. Participants will experience various explorations such as energy practices, embodied inquiry, intuitive writing, heart-opening meditations, partner exercises, and invitations to vulnerability as we learn to guide ourselves back to our own lived and expressed experience in the moment. Following the sparks of life — all the way to the flame. (Learn More)

Who is This Intensive For?

Performing artists who are committed to exploring the full range of their inner creative resources. We welcome the wildly curious, generous, and vulnerable. It is designed for both the highly experienced artist seeking ways to discover new techniques, those students who have been already studying the Yat work, and those eager passionate beginners who are ready and willing to enter a process that celebrates themselves and the unknown. This is for those who are committed to making a huge investment in themselves!

No experience or prior knowledge of Yat Malmgren’s work is necessary to fully benefit from the Intensive.

Why Catalonia?

Catalonia in North Eastern Spain is an extremely vital and unique area with an exemplary dedication to the arts both historical and current. It is the birthplace of Dalí, Miró and Gaudí among many others and has a hugely diverse and lively performing arts scene. Our intention is to bring together artists from the Americas (Canada, US & Mexico) with Catalonian artists mediated by our wonderful translator Elisabet Rafols. YBC has a long connection with Catalonia where Tom  spent many years directing productions and teaching the Yat work.

Why Rural?

One of the great advantages of attending an Intensive in a rural setting is that the everyday distractions of urban life fall away. The environment encourages a process that is deep and personal. Being away from the familiarity of home. and in community, provides conditions for deeper focus, rapid realizations and experiential shifts. There will be ample opportunity to work together and for solitude. Time to move with the rhythms of nature and breathe deeply into your own heart.

The Property

Nestled amidst nature, Mas Baget is a rustic haven a 100-minute train from Barcelona Sant Station. A beautiful 18th-century stone retreat house and studio, lovingly restored; the property features a large swimming pool and sweeping views. Conveniently located within a 20-minute drive from Reus railway station and airport, 10 minutes from Les Borges del Camp train station, and a half-hour from the beach and Tarragona’s ancient amphitheatre.

We will be working in a 1020sqft (100M²) studio and in a well-raked, shady, level area outside under the trees.

The property offers beautiful views of the ocean, a large olive orchard, a huge swimming pool, BBQs and outdoor seating in the shade. All accessible by ramps.

There are multiple indoor gathering places in the cool stone house and an enormous commercial kitchen. While students sleep in shared accommodations, there is plenty of room to find solitude for solo work and contemplation.

Embodiment

Free your inner resistance through Breath, Sound and Movement. Open yourself to surprising possibilities in a safe and supported space. Take the time and space for instrumental resets and develop freedom as well as coherence. This daily psycho-physical exploration is an essential foundation to all the work that follows.

Testimonials

  • “Three weeks of diving in to the unknown parts of myself through this beautiful work. Miranda, Pamela, and Tom’s guidance was gentle, filled with clarity and abstraction at the same time, naturally inviting me through curiosity to know myself and the world through the different lenses available. Intense and transformative! Looking forward to see how this planted seed will grow . .” -Santiago Dávila (Artist based in Mexico City)

  • “What a beautiful way to go deep into the work! Each day was filled with meaning and expression. I went to places of depth in this work I never knew were there in me… I did Shakespeare! Feeling grateful for the deep daily embodiment practices, the breathtaking nature, the delightful community, and a place to hone my craft so gently and powerfully! ” -Alicia Dattner (Actor/Comedian Los Angeles)

  • “This YBC summer intensive reiterated, reinforced the creative aspect of being an artist. Rejuvenates, unearths the wealth of authentic expression. The ART part of being a creative is strengthened. A necessity in the grime and hustle of being a working actor … it was at times painful but most of the time exhilarating. Each facilitator brought their unique expertise" -Sunita Mukhi (Actor LA, Manila, NYC)
